Getting Started with Data Factory
Data Factory is a powerful tool that enables you to integrate data from various sources seamlessly. One of the key features that I utilize is the copy assistant, which helps in transferring data into Fabric rapidly. However, there’s a common frustration many users face: the need to repeatedly fill out the same connection forms each time they want to set up a pipeline.
Utilizing the Copy Assistant
When I open a new pipeline in Fabric, the first thing I do is click on the copy assistant. For example, if I want to pull data from an Azure SQL database, I typically select that option and fill out the necessary form. The good news is that if I’ve connected to that source previously, the dropdown will populate with matching connections.
However, it’s tedious to fill out this form every single time. Why can’t there be a dropdown list of all connections available for easy searching? This was a question I had until I reached out to Alex Powers, a Data Factory expert.
Discovering Hidden Features
Alex showed me some tricks that I was completely unaware of. First, he pointed out that you can see all your recent and recommended connections by clicking “View More.” By typing the name of the connection, I could quickly find what I needed. I felt a bit silly for not knowing this sooner!
He then suggested checking the OneLake data hub. By typing the connection name there, I could also find my connection quickly. But the best part? I didn’t even need to navigate anywhere. By simply typing “cloud” in the home search bar, I could access my connection instantly!
Streamlining the Copy Process
Once I double-clicked the connection, it automatically created the connection for me, allowing me to breeze through the copy assistant wizard. This feature is a game-changer, as it saves time and reduces the frustration of entering the same information repeatedly.
After double-clicking, the wizard fills out everything automatically, including the type of connection I want to use. You might wonder where these connections come from. I previously discussed using the Power BI gateway to connect Data Factory to on-premises data sources. These cloud connections streamline the whole process.
Managing Connections and Gateways
To manage your connections, go to Settings and click on “Manage Connections and Gateways.” Here, you can view all existing connections. If you type “cloud” in the search bar, you’ll see your cloud connections and any on-premises gateways you might have set up.
You can also create new connections by clicking the plus icon. This is where all your new connections will be stored, and Data Factory will utilize these cloud connections effectively.
Enhancements in Copy Activities
Another interesting feature I found is when I add a copy activity directly to the pipeline canvas instead of using the copy assistant. The new experience allows me to choose a source connection and simply type in “cloud” to find my AdventureWorks connection.
Although this experience has been integrated into the copy data activity, I still wish it could be added to the copy assistant as well. Regardless, it’s fantastic to see these enhancements being made to streamline our workflows.
Reusing Connections
One key takeaway is that you can reuse connections without filling out the same forms repeatedly. By leveraging the “Get Data” experience and typing the name of your connection or server, you can significantly speed up your workflow.
It’s crucial to stay updated with the latest features and improvements in Data Factory. As I mentioned earlier, I had fallen behind on reading the latest articles, but I found this knowledge refreshingly useful.
