Course Prerequisites
As an introductory course to Power BI, no prior experience with Power BI is necessary. The Power BI Foundations Plus course starts from the basics and offers a comprehensive programme that equips participants with a solid understanding of Power BI and its key features.
The course begins with an overview, covering the value offering, licensing, and pricing options. Participants then delve into Power BI Desktop, learning about its components, workflow, and how to connect to data sources.
The course also includes the Power BI Cloud Service, emphasising best practices for creating dashboards and securely sharing content across the organisation.
Focusing on data modelling concepts, the course teaches best practices for handling different data structures and utilising a star schema for efficient analysis. Participants gain hands-on experience with data extraction, transformation, cleaning, and loading processes. They also learn key report-building concepts and functionalities to create compelling interactive reports for end users.
Additionally, the course introduces participants to DAX, the formula language in Power BI, covering evaluation context, calculated measures, and time intelligence concepts. Governance and distribution topics are also covered, including row-level security, creating group workspaces, and sharing reports and dashboards within a Power BI app.

Power BI Desktop Introduction:
Participants will learn about Power BI Desktop Help and Updates, gain an understanding of updates & preview features, technical options & settings, and exploring Power BI Desktop components and terminology
Power BI Cloud Service (The Wow Features):
Participants will get an overview of the Cloud Service, role and functionality for Consumers, understanding Workspaces, report and dashboard distinctives, approach to creating effective dashboards, building a high-level summary dashboard, installing & connecting to Apps, features and functionality to extract information, and using Natural Language Queries (Q&A)
Data Modelling Concepts:
Participants will gain an understanding of Data Modelling best practice, handling of different data structures, the purpose of Relationships between Data Tables, What is a Star Schema & why would I need it?, and combining data from multiple sources
Extracting, Transforming & Loading Data:
Participants will gain an understanding of introduction to Query Building, understanding Query Design & the ETL Process, Query Editor Overview, importing Data from various sources, importing Queries from other PBIX files, understanding the Concept of Applied Steps, Query Building Best Practices, Fact & Dimension Tables, common Data Transformations, creating Columns from Examples, Non-loading Datasets, and Connecting to a new source location

Participants will learn best practice for creating Relationships between Tables, Data Types & Formatting, Optimising Q&A - Creating Data Synonyms, tidying Up the Model, handling Multiple Relationships between Two Tables.
Introduction to DAX (Data Analysis Expressions):
Participants will learn an introduction to measures in Power BI, difference between Implicit Vs Explicit Measures, working with Base functions and Metrics, introduction to DAX (Formula Language), understanding DAX Syntax, commonly Used DAX Functions, understanding Evaluation Context, creating Calculated Measures Vs Calculated Columns
Report Building:
Participants will gain an understanding of optimising the design, choosing appropriate Visuals based on Context, complete the story of the Report, Adding and Formatting Visualisations, understanding Visual interactivity, customising report visual interactivity, reducing page clutter, using the Format Painter, visual alignment tips, custom page sizing, making enhancements with Shapes and Lines, adding Logos & Custom Icons, using buttons to enhance navigation, adding conditional formatting, creating or modifying visual themes, and best practice guidelines and development tip
Extracting, Transforming & Loading Data:
Participants will gain an understanding Visual level vs Default summarisation, customising default order of columns, working with KPI cards, optimising the message of default report tooltips (Text), understanding the Drills feature, creating Drill through reports, filtering and optimizing the Matrix Layouts
Report Functionality:

Governance:
Participants will learn scenarios For Sharing Reports & Dashboards, understanding Row Level Security, creating Security Roles, and viewing and testing Security Roles
Distribution:
Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of publishing models to the Cloud Service, adding users to Security Defined Roles, creating Group Workspaces, controlling access to Group Workspaces, collaborating on Content in a Workspace, adding users & editing workspaces, and publishing Power BI Apps for consumers
Data Import and Connection Techniques:
Participants will learn about data source settings & adjustments, create & manage query parameters, advanced ETL processes, working with multiple fact tables, connecting to APIs for online data integration, referencing queries for complex data manipulations, combining files from a folder to streamline processes and accessing internet databases for enriched data analysis
Data Modelling for Improved Performance:
Participants will learn how to create conditional columns, using columns from examples, merging and appending queries, building a star schema from a flat file, overcoming layout limitations with custom mapping, tips for query error Handling, column profiling and distribution, extracting & replacing text, and pivoting & unpivoting columns
Power BI Bookmarks:
Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the Value Offering, using Bookmarks for presentations, how to use Bookmarks to enhance the Visual Story, switching Between Chart Types, use buttons or images with Bookmarks, consolidating report views onto a Single Page, and other Use Cases
Dynamic Switching of Measures & Dimensions Inside of Visuals:
Participants will learn about concepts and application of field of Parameters, utilising field parameters for flexible analysis, switching the comparison metric, switching between multiple measures, synching multiple field parameters, switching dimensions in visuals, creating dynamic headers for interactivity, adding dynamic subtitles to reports, and using field parameters with drilldowns
DAX: Understanding Core Concepts:
Participants will gain an understanding of creating calculated columns & tables, understanding row context, unravelling the filter context, referencing measures inside a metric, leveraging the Calculate function, dynamically modifying the filter context, implementing time intelligence functions, referencing inactive relationships in the data model, and using DAX iterating functions
Report Page Tooltips:
Participants will gain an understanding creating a tooltip report page, configuring & designing a tooltip page, using tooltip reports with drill-through pages, adding tooltip reports to the visual header, using tooltips with buttons, and using multiple tooltip reports on the same page
Throughout the course, ample time will be provided for students to follow along with the instructor during demonstrations and labs. The labs are designed to reinforce the concepts learned in each module and provide hands-on practice in applying the skills

Some general requirements: All delegates need a laptop running Windows OS (BYO Laptop), Delegates will need to be able to download and install the latest version of Power BI Desktop on their laptop, or need to have the latest version pre-installed. Training files and a digital copy of the manual will be provided as well as a Power BI Pro accounts for use during the course. Those attending our online courses, should have access to 2 screens.
