Why Power BI Maps Sometimes Fail
Power BI uses Bing Maps to power its map and filled map visuals. These visuals require data-sharing permissions with Bing and sometimes TomTom. If these permissions are disabled—often due to organizational security policies—map visuals fail to load properly.
Enabling Map Visuals in Power BI Desktop
To fix the issue:
- Open File → Options and settings → Options.
- Under Security, enable Map and Filled Map visuals.
- Click OK to save.
This allows your visuals to communicate with Bing Maps, enabling the maps to render correctly.
Admin-Level Solution via the Power BI Service
If changing the local settings doesn’t solve your problem, an administrator may need to adjust organization-wide settings:
- Log in to PowerBI.com.
