The Problem: Constant Rebuilding of Models
Before this update, any small model change adjusting relationships, adding a DAX measure, tweaking row-level security meant going back to Power BI Desktop, making edits, and republishing. This slowed collaboration, especially in shared workspaces.
The Solution: Edit & Track Semantic Models in the Power BI Service
Now, you can:
- Edit semantic models directly in the Power BI Service
- Write and test DAX measures on the fly
- Adjust relationships without leaving your browser
- Create and assign Row-Level Security (RLS) roles in the Service
- Restore previous versions using Semantic Model Version History
Who Can Use This Feature?
Currently, Semantic Model Editing and Version History are available only in:
- Premium workspaces (Premium Per User or Premium Capacity)
- Workspaces with Large Semantic Model Storage Format enabled
Other key points:
- Not supported in My Workspace
- Limited to five saved versions per model
- Only available for Enhanced Metadata Format models
Enabling Semantic Model Editing in Your Workspace
- Create or open a Premium Workspace.
- Go to Settings → Large Semantic Model Storage Format and enable it.
- Ensure your model is upgraded to Enhanced Metadata Format.
- Make sure your tenant admin has allowed Semantic Model Editing.
Using Semantic Model Version History
From your Power BI Service workspace:
- Open your semantic model in view mode (default).
- Switch to edit mode when you want to make changes.
- Open the Version History pane to see up to 5 past versions.
- Restore an older version with a single click.
Tip: Always add a description when saving changes it will make version tracking easier for you and your team.
Live Editing Examples
- Changing Relationships Toggle relationships between active and inactive without going to Desktop.
- Adding a Measure Create DAX measures right in the Service, fixing broken dependencies instantly.
- Setting Row-Level Security Define roles and assign users directly in the Service for faster deployment.
Limitations to Keep in Mind
- Only 5 versions are stored older ones get overwritten.
- Moving a model between capacities deletes version history.
- Users need Build and Write permissions to edit models.
- Contributors, Members, and Admins bypass RLS in the Service only Viewers have RLS applied.
